    ART Reproductive Center Scientific Director

Dr. David Hill is co-founder and Scientific Director of ART Reproductive Center, the Laboratory for Assisted Reproductive Technology, which provides clinical services for all patients at the Southern California Reproductive Center.

The top-rated ART laboratory is the technology resource that allows the SCRC to achieve and maintain its high rate of successful pregnancies. In fact, many physicians from other medical centers regularly refer their patients to ART for clinical services and assistance with reproduction and fertility issues.

Dr. Hill is an eminently qualified and experienced scientist whose entire career reflects leadership in reproductive health. He is currently a Certified High Complexity Laboratory Director and Certified Embryology Laboratory Director. At ART, he directs research and training in in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer (IVF-ET) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) by physicians at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center who are studying to become fertility specialists. In fact, ART serves as the designated IVF-ET training program for UCLA and Cedars physicians who are seeking board certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Hill is also co-principal investigator on a research grant investigating the development of stem cell lines that can potentially cure serious human diseases.

Dr. Hill’s career demonstrates a continuous series of achievements in improving pregnancy rates through applied research, as well as an exceptional ability to recognize and adopt new technologies that have promise for improving fertility.

Before setting up the ART laboratory, Dr. Hill was program director for many years at the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Century City Hospital, Los Angeles. Prior to that, he worked as an embryologist at the In Vitro Fertilization Laboratory of the John Muir Regional Medical Center in Walnut Creek, California.

Dr Hill received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. He received his Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Connecticut. After that, he completed two postdoctoral fellowships, one through Harvard Medical School and the other through the John Muir Cancer and Aging Research Institute, Walnut Creek.

Dr. Hill is an expert in both classic reproduction technologies and today’s highly advanced laboratory systems and methods for achieving a healthy pregnancy. These include the use of micromanipulation stations and micro-operative lasers required for PGD and assisted embryo hatching procedures, as well as vitrification systems for embryo and egg cryopreservation.

ART is a high-volume laboratory equipped with far more sophisticated equipment and workstations than might be found at smaller facilities. Dr. Hill believes this benefits patients, as their needs for various time-sensitive services can be accommodated by trained professionals with ready access to the technologies they need, without scheduling problems or unwanted delays. Because ART handles so many patients, Dr. Hill finds that positive trends relating to small adjustments in laboratory processes can be identified quickly, ensuring the highest possible success rates.

Dr. Hill is very active in scientific publishing. He is an ad hoc reviewer and contributing writer to Fertility and Sterility and Journal of the Clinical Embryologist. As a researcher, he has also published his own studies of infertility and reproductive medicine in Prenatal Diagnosis, Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, Journal of the American College of Surgeons and Reproductive Medicine Forum, among others. He co-authored a chapter on “The Andrology Laboratory” in the reference text Male Infertility: Infertility and Reproductive Medicine Clinics of North America, No. 10, Vol. 3.

Among his professional appointments, Dr. Hill was recently elected Laboratory Director of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, 2009 – 2010, the largest subgroup of professionals within the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

For many years, Dr. Hill has served as an inspector in the College of American Pathology / Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology Laboratory Accreditation Program, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Validation Committee for Assisted Reproduction Programs. He is also a member of the Stem Cell Research Oversight Institutional Review Board at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

A strong proponent of sharing advances to improve results in the fertility laboratory, Dr. Hill is a frequent and popular speaker at scientific conferences. He regularly presents his latest findings at meetings of the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the annual World Congress on In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer. Dr. Hill lives in Hermosa Beach with his wife. They have three grown children.
